Hidden children, survivors of the Holocaust in Brussels

Rue des Tanneurs

After hearing Sonia’s testimony, head to rue des Tanneurs, right on the corner of Rue du Lavoir.

At Rue des Tanneurs, you’ll find memory plaques—or as they are also called, Stolpersteine—placed in the pavement. These small plaques bear the names of Jewish individuals and families who were taken during the roundups and were murdered in the camps.

Since 1993, the artist Gunter Demnig has been placing more than seventy thousand plaques (70,000) in most European countries for all victim groups of the Third Reich (Jews, Roma, Resistance fighters, victims of euthanasia programs, Jehovah’s Witnesses, “homosexuals,” political opponents, “asocials,” etc.).

Find a plaque and collect the information you can gather from the Stolperstein.

In light of the testimony of Sonia, take the time to reflect on the memory plaques you see and the trajectory of the individuals their inscriptions remember.

Write down your thoughts in 1-2 sentences.
