The Train Tracks

Most victims were confined to cattle cars (like the one in the image above) as they were deported along these rails to concentration and death camps.

As you learn more about this chapter of the Holocaust, consider the importance of using artifacts to memorialize horrific events. Read the inscription on the pedestal and take a closer look at the train tracks.

Then think about these questions:

  • How do these tracks speak to how technological advancements (like the invention of the train or more recently, advances in mass communication) can be used to do harm?
  • Why are the train tracks important to preserving the memory of this tragic history?
  • How can artifacts from sites of mass atrocity like these train tracks benefit current and future generations?
