About the Monument

This monument, built in 1964, is dedicated to the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered during the Holocaust. The Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust were victims of antisemitism: prejudice or hatred against Jews.

The monument ensures that their stories are remembered. It was commissioned by the Association of Jewish New Americans, a group of several hundred families, many of whom fled Europe in the wake of Hitler’s destruction. The group donated the monument to the city, in conjunction with the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia (now named Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia).

The hatred of Jews has existed since ancient times, and is often referred to as the “longest hatred.” The causes and context of antisemitism have evolved over time and are shaped by local political, economic and social climates.

It is important to understand that antisemitism did not end after the Holocaust. Antisemitism continues to this day, and it is on the rise.

This IWalk will teach you about the Holocaust as a violent manifestation of antisemitism. By understanding the connection between historical antisemitism and its contemporary manifestations, we will help you become aware and equip you with the knowledge and motivation to be able to counter antisemitism and other forms of hate when you are confronted with it.
