In the footsteps of Baja's Jewry

The fate of the synagogue

Listen to an interview with Sándor Bloch, who talks about the time of the German occupation and the fate of the synagogue.

Sándor Bloch was born in 1931 in a Neolog Jewish family. His family was first trading in wine and later sold perfumery. His family didn’t raise him to be religious. In line with the anti-Jewish laws, he is deported at the age of 13 to concentration camps in Czech, German and Austrian territories. He was liberated in Theresienstadt (then Austria, today the Czech Republic), then went to study in a vocational school for business. Upon returning to Baja he worked as an optician, supporting his parents, who lost their health in the lagers. His wife was a doctor, they had no children. His interview was recorded in 2000, in Baja.
