Mihály Munkácsy street used to be the city’s main passage, connecting the salt-office and warehouses with the market square. Munkácsy St, the site of the synagogue was formerly called “Hoffnungs Gasse” (Hope Street), which referred to the good relationship between the Jews and the locals.
