Many young immigrants found work in the building industry upon graduation from high school. Initially, Andy wanted to be a draftsman and one of the most accessible ways to pursue this path was to become an apprentice. Andy found an opportunity to apprentice as a structural steel detailer but because he was still a minor, his mother co-signed his apprenticeship agreement.
As part of his apprenticeship, he received training at the Provincial Institute of Trades, which was located here, at 21 Nassau Street. Today, this building holds residential units.
Andy remained in this field until 1969, when he decided to become a taxi cab driver.
