Watch the testimony of Regina Weiss who remembers their temporary home in Lisbon, then read her short biography.
Regina Weiss (née Pinter) was born in 1929, in Cologne, Germany, in a Jewish family. Her father, Leo Pinter was a businessman trading with furniture and antiques, while her mother, Helen Pinter was a housewife. She had a younger brother, David. She went to a Jewish school, but she could only finish third grade as Jewish students were not allowed to study after 1938. The Nazi goverment in Germany gradually passed more serious discriminating laws against Jews, therefore the family’s circumstances gradually worsened. After the November pogroms in 1938 the family decided to leave Germany. By 1940 they managed to flee to Portugal through the Netherlands, Belgium and France. In 1941 the family left Europe to the United States, but then they resided in Cuba. Eventually, the family moved to the United States. She got married, and has four children and grandchildren. Her interview was recorded in 1998, in Kew Garden, USA.
