60,000 to 80,000 Jewish people passed through Portugal during the Second World War. As you have already learned during this IWalk, refugees need supplies, such as food and medical care, but most importantly shelter or a home where they can stay temporarily.
Several organizations were founded to help refugees with the above-mentioned, such as the COMASSIS, the “Portuguese Commission for the Assistance of the Jewish Refugees in Portugal” directed by Augusto Esaguy, which had its headquarters here, in number 16, Rua do Monte Olivete.
