About the Interviewee

Eva Wimmer (b. Bihari Éva) was born in 1927 Budapest, Hungary. Her family was Catholic. Her father was an electrical engineer. Eva became involved with the Swedish Red Cross in the end of September 1944. Using her excellent German language skills, she became the interpreter for Raoul Wallenberg. Through this work, Eva helped those living in protected houses and interpreted for Wallenberg during his death march interventions and rescue activities. After the war, she studied law, diplomacy, economics, and export trade. She was a witness at the trial of Ferenc Szálasi (the leader of the Arrow Cross Party) in the autumn of 1945.

To honor her rescue activities, Yad Vashem in Jerusalem awarded the "Righteous among the Nations” prize to Eva Wimmer. The interview was conducted in 1999 in Budapest, Hungary.
