Jewish Heritage of Alfama

Jewish holidays

Traditions and religious holidays play a major role in Jewish culture. Since the destruction of the Second Temple by the Roman emperor Titus in 70 CE, synagogues gained a more important role in Jewish religious life: they are the place for community gatherings, celebrations and worship. The Jewish Quarter of Alfama district must have had a synagogue according to the sources, probably at Beco das Barrelas, but unfortunately it does not exist anymore. Religious Jews attend the synagogue on the Sabbath, on high holidays, and also on Purim or Sukkot, etc.
