Jewish Heritage of Alfama

Chafariz d'El-Rei

The style of the Chafariz d'El-Rei Hotel (Neo-Moorish and Brazilian Art Nouveau) is as eclectic as the quarter which you are going to pass through. Turning our back to the hotel, we can have a look at the harbor and the Rio Tejo, which is the symbol of the vivid life and the vortex of travellers and merchants who visited Lisbon, moved in and out from the city or even settled there throughout the centuries. Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon, established during the Moorish period (8th century). The name Alfama originates from the Arabic word Alhamma (fountains, bath). The Alfama was usually inhabited by poor fishermen and other poor residents. Besides the Moors, many Jews settled down here. King Pedro I. authorized a Jewish Quarter inside Alfama in the 14th century.
