The Jewish Quarter of Alfama was one of the four Jewish Quarters of Lisbon and it dates back to the 14th century. Fortunately, the 1755 earthquake barely affected the area and we can still see many remnants of it today, including the centre of the Quarter, Rua de Judiaria. During this IWalk you will learn about the Portuguese Jewish culture through visiting medieval sites and through listening to testimonies of Holocaust survivors as well as rescuers, who are, in some way or another, related to the rich Portuguese Jewish heritage.
This work has been funded by national funds through the Portuguese funding agency FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. within the framework of the project Remembering the Past, Learning for the Future: Research-Based Digital Learning from Testimonies of Survivors and Rescuers of the Holocaust in Portugal (ID: 740639658).
