You are standing on the site of the former Soldiers’ (Mishchanska) Synagogue. In December 1941, the Nazis locked about 400 Jews – elderly people, women, and children who were unable to reach the ghetto – inside the synagogue. All of them died from cold and starvation. Today, the Elektroterm factory stands on this site, but the foundation of the building preserves the memory of how war destroys lives and deprives people of the freedom of choice. During the occupation, Kharkiv families made different, equally difficult choices, without knowing what the consequences would be.
