Our walk begins outside the old First Naryever Congregation, across from Sally Bird Park. The synagogue was founded in 1914 and was the largest Jewish congregation in downtown Toronto. After World War I, a large Jewish commercial center was formed at the nearby intersection of Brunswick and Harbord. The neighborhood itself had a predominant Jewish population. By the time Anita arrived in 1948, Harbord Village was a central part of life not only for Jewish individuals in Toronto, but also for other groups who called Toronto home.
