The Jewish Hospital

After the liquidation of the Jewish old-age home and the Jewish hospital in Ostrava, a new Jewish hospital was set up in the building of the former Municipal Medical Institute in Přívoz on the orders of the occupiers.

One of the reasons for its existence was a propagandistic effect on future victims. If the deportations themselves were presented as a journey to labor camps, the Nazis needed to reassure the deportees that their infirm and sick relatives would be taken care of.

All that was a lie, of course. Patients and hospital staff were deported to be murdered shortly after the mass transports left.
