The first hiding place


Mass deportations of Jews from Slovakia, organized by the Slovak state and its nationalist militia called the Hlinka Guard, began in March 1942. Thanks to living in a small flat within the courtyard of the house at Špitálska 18, right next to the police headquarters, Gabriella and her immediate family evaded capture, deportation and death at that time.
